What is kyphosis?
Hunchback (a.k.a kyphosis) usually refers to an abnormally outward curved spine. It’s most common in older women and often related to osteoporosis. Symptoms of kyphosis include back pain and stiffness. Other people with the condition develop an exaggerated forward rounding of the back. When the spine bends in more than one plane, it becomes a more complicated form of kyphosis.

Kyphoscoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine in the sagittal and coronal planes. Coronal plane measurements are side-to-side and sagittal plane measurements are front-to-back. Adult scoliosis is defined as a lateral deviation of more than 10 degrees in the coronal plane, as measured by the Cobb angle. Kyphosis and lordosis are the curvatures of the spine in the sagittal plane. The cervical and lumbar spines have a normal lordosis (backward curvature) of 35 to 80 degrees whereas the thoracic spine generally has a natural degree of kyphosis (forward curvature) of 30 to 50 degrees.
The symptoms of kyphoscoliosis can range. Some people with the condition may only have a slouch or abnormal hunch. More severe cases may affect the lungs and heart, as well as muscles for day-to-day activities.
What causes kyphoscoliosis?
Many a times this condition have no known cause. In other cases, this spinal condition is the result of:
- Prolonged poor posture: Bad posture over time may result in postural kyphoscoliosis. It can be treated with extensive physical therapy.
- Tuberculosis infection (TB): TB can weaken the spine leading to abnormal bends in the spine.
- Osteochondrodysplasia: This is a type of skeletal dysplasia, a condition that impairs the growth of spinal bones, cartilage, and connective tissue.
- Degenerative diseases: Such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. These conditions can lead to spinal deformities.
People over 50 years of age and older are likely to develop this spinal abnormality if degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis are already present.
What are the symptoms of kyphoscoliosis?
Kyphoscoliosis symptoms include a hunched or uneven back. The spinal condition comes with a number of other mild symptoms, like:

- In more severe cases, kyphoscoliosis can affect the lungs, nerves, and other organs.
